Nevertheless we’d like to point out that a vacation it is not only a matter of weather, ler’s look at it from a broader perspective. Mountaineering in dolomites calls a massive number of people roaming around pinnacles and walking paths. Some of them are long and white beard professionals, others less. On this variegated population there is always the danger of accident and even severe injury. We’re going to talk a while about it because our association is well consciuous of the importance of risk prevention campaingns.

From numbers to recommendations

In Italy there is a fantastic rescue&first aid professional voluteering corp, the so called CNSAS (national alpine and speleologic rescue corp) they are somehow a spin off of C.A.I. and they do provide stats about their "job", here we have those of 2008, covering South East of dolomites:
Le immagini del Calendario

These number shows that more than 20% of the helicopter service is devoted to not Italian inmates but to foreigners. The percentace is high indeed. So we strongly reccomend to take every precaution to prevent from hurting yourselves or others ("others" includes the rescue team).
The second chart in the page shows us the causes of the accidents and reports a separate cluster on the left edge of it. This subset of causes (orienteering failure, under qualification, delay, bad weather, wore out, heart attak) represent more than one third (37,4%) of the total causes and they are mostly under the control of the mountaineer. So please do use these information to design your experience matching personal skills and mountain terrain hardness.

Insurance

Please do consider that in Italy all expenses the rescue team incurr to bring you at the hospital are covered by healthcare service (as far as we know). But, a big but, if you are lost in the fog or wore out in the night in a canyon and the C.N.S.A.S. do move and bring you back to a safe shelter (i.e. no need of hospital) the whole bill is at your expense.
Insurance companies do know this business.
